So close...
You know, everytime I hear a person give advice that they're not experienced in... I just shake my head and internally wish I could be around to see what they ACTUALLY do when it happens to them.
THIS article had me doing just that. You should read it. G'head. I'll wait.
Did you read it?
Seems like a pretty decent article...right?
It's great in theory---
Here comes the bigbutt oops "but..."
It seems to be an epidemic in the world, to not teach your child from the get-go that there are just some things we just don't do. Too many parents are negotiating with young children, who are too inexperienced & who are not capable of rational thinking yet.
I cannot begin to tell you how many people I come in contact with who let their children make all the decisions about what they will and will not do. Especially little kids. These parents use words like "free-agency" and "free-will" and feel they are given their child the power to stand up for themselves by giving them the 'right' to choose everything. Then these same parents are stunned when their kids are disobedient and completely out of control as teenagers.
Children don't learn obedience and self-control without being taught it from a young age.
It can be done without spanking, but requires MUCH effort. (That's a whole different post.)
Even then, no one sails thorugh parenting teenagers without trials. But it's a lot easier to tell a teenager "No" when you have already established what is acceptable.
We all love our children and would gladly give our own life for them. There is no question in my mind that most every parent wants what's best for their kids. I realize we all come from such different ranges of backgrounds, that our parenting skills will be different.
I certainly am no expert at raising kids---I've made plenty of mistakes. But I learned from a very early age that using free-will, or free-agency doesn't always lead to free-agency and free-will...and that my consequences could hold me in greater bondage than the choice to just be obedient.
And the proof, as they say, is in the puddin'!
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. By a small sample we may judge of the whole piece.~~Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
