I C U
The past 2 days have been spent in a whirlwind of emotions.....fear, anger, joy, gratitude, and love.
My friend here called me on Wednesday, in a panic, asking me to rush to a place where 2 of her sons had been involved in a car accident. I raced there, thinking it was a fender bender or maybe a little accident...and wanting to help her out. She wasn't sure how long it would take her to get there and she didn't want them to be there alone.
Incidently, the younger son is the one who took M to the Winter Formal.
Also---Before I forget to mention it, their dad has been in Iraq for over a year.
As I neared the area she mentioned, I picked up my cell phone to call one of the boys to find out exactly where the accident was....but snapped the phone shut before I dialed; a gasp escaped my throat... As the road crested the top of the hill, there was no doubt where the accident was.
The scene that unfolded in front of me was indescribable.
The oldest son had taken off his seatbelt to reach in back to get his ID Card to go on post. The younger son hadn't seen the truck that was coming towards them around a trecherous bend until after he pulled away from the stop sign. The truck was going well over the speed limit, and t-boned them....throwing the oldest from the car through the window and sent the other careening into a ditch.
The lifeflighted one of the sons to a hospital in KC and the other one to a hospital in town.
For 2 days I have spent more than 12 hours each day being the mediator, the bouncer, the spokesperson for her. Being the substitute parent since her husband isn't here. Being the soft place for her to lose it, and the joke-maker when she had it back together.
She has raked herself over the coals because the oldest and she had been fighting all week...typical senior-teenager stuff...
They both are in stable condition, and nearly out of the woods by some awesome miracle.
Life is precious.
Don't wait. Take a moment and love your family. Agree to disagree and figure it out another time. Hug. And express your love for them to them.
Hugs, to all of you.
