Family Ties
Family came to visit today.
It's my favorite uncle and his family.
He's my favorite, because when I was a struggling teen... and he was serving in the Navy.. when he got sent to Korea, he wrote me letters.
Not the kind that talked down to me.. but he asked me questions and wanted to know my feelings.
At one point, I felt like he was the only one who cared about me.
And he still calls me LAMMY in real life. (Childhood nickname)
He still hugs me tight... like he really is glad to see me.
My aunt and I have always hit it off (I am only 10 years younger than she is)... we talk and talk for hours at a time, and laugh about life when we all lived at my grandparents 2 bedroom apartment in California. (I was living there going to college, and my uncle, aunt, and 3 of their kids came to live while he finished his degree... my aunt was pg with baby #4 at the time. It was tight, but boy we had some good times!) We marvelled at how far each family has come in the years... and how many great strides we'd made.
My uncle reminded me of something I said, on our many late night talks, when I was in the throes of dating (or lack there of). I'd said... "I cannot WAIT until I'm married, so I have no more lonely, dateless Friday nights." So ironic...that I married a military man, and he was gone off and on the first 5 years we were married.
I'd forgotten I'd said that.
When we were stationed in Texas, we spent a lot of time visiting back and forth for weekends-- we lived about 3 hours away. It was wonderful. And I have missed that.
So to have them come for even a brief time.... I am grateful.
After they arrived, we talked and talked like old times... laughing and joking. Watching all the kids jump back into old conversations as well was truly marvelous.
What a pleasure.
