After 12 years of being our protector and friend, I'm going to miss you.

Your family misses you.
And cried their eyes out after you took your last breath.

What sent me to tears was your daughter whining and crying when we buried you.
She feels your loss, too.

I'll forever be grateful for your fierce protectiveness over our kids...
and of me.
For your companionship through deployments and moves, and through pregnancies, and sick kids...
and for your gentle spirit.
I'll miss your silly teeth-baring smile that you saved for your favorite people.
And I'll miss your nightly checks to ensure everyone was tucked in bed at night.
Never in my nearly 40 years of life, did I ever think I could ever be close to a pet...
let alone cry at the death of one.
But I cried.
And my throat still gets a lump when I remember you really are gone.
