Squeeze me? Baking Powder?

Ok. I don't profess to be the most articulate person on this planet... I don't even profess to be the most articulater person anywhere. But there are just some things that irk the tar out of me. WHY do people use big words when they aren't quite sure what they are??? It happens all the time. My ex-neighbor used to use words that sounded close to the word she wanted, but didn't mean anything close to what she meant. Did that make sense??? I used to just cringe everytime she did it. It happens so often. I used to correct people, but it just embarrassed them, and they just kept on doin' it...so I figure I'm the only one with the problem... then I will just keep it to myself, and try to keep from looking like a know-it-all. I don't try to sound that way, and I know for sure I'm not a know-it-all. So, I just let it go. Yesterday, while I was taking a much needed break, the girls and I watched Wife Swap . There was a mom who seemed educated and rather intelligent. Yet, she continually used words that were "nearly there". "How can people live in this SQUANDER".
squan·der Pronunciation Key (skwndr)tr.v. squan·dered, squan·der·ing, squan·ders To spend wastefully or extravagantly; dissipate. To fail to take advantage of; lose a chance for: squandered an opportunity to go to college. Obsolete. To scatter. What she meant was "SQUALOR" squal·or Pronunciation Key (skwlr)n. A filthy and wretched condition or quality. The next show on TV was another reality show, and one of the panel judges again used a word that was close, but not what he should have used. I cannot, for the life of me, remember what it was he said.. What happend to people checking a dictionary?? Even online--- one can use a free dictionary online, or even a free thesaurus that one can type a word (even spelled wrong) and get the meaning and correct spelling at your fingertips. Alas, People quit bothering. I think people try to use big words to sound intelligent. My philosophy is that if you don't say the right big word, you look like an idiot. I'd rather hear someone use small, concise words, than to hear them use the big words wrong. We'll now return you to regularly scheduled programming. That is all.
