Everything I learned, I learned from Laura Ingalls and Jan Brady

Lately, my kids look forward to one hour a day for TV time.
At precisely 5:30pm, each of my kids meander in... some of them pretending they just 'happened' to be in the TV room at that time...
but they all seem to make it...
just about every day.

No... it's not Hannah Montana

or The Suite Life....

of all things...

It's the PBS hour of BradyBunch/Little House on the Prairie.

Yes, even the boy love these shows.

I am usually starting dinner, or ironing around this time, and get to hear the comments my kids make while watching. I giggle to myself at the things they take away from such simple shows.

I still laugh at the dumb antics of those Brady's....

and still wear that silly smile at the stories told in the little house called The Ingalls home.

The things I learned have lasted my lifetime....

  • Don't crash your brother's date with the hottest girl in school and expect to get away with it.
  • Don't wear ringlets and demand everyone to do your bidding...you'll always end up falling in the fishing hole.
  • Don't keep secrets... they always come out uglier in the end...
  • Big families have more fun...especially when you're poor.
  • Life happens to everyone...even when you're perfectly coiffed.
  • Life isn't fair.
  • It isn't all about you. Actually it usually isn't.
  • Not everyone is good at everything. And it's ok.

I laugh a lot at the parental reactions to the antics of these kids... and realize as a parent... that I probably do a lot more hollerin' and screaming when my kids attempt a 'Brady-scheme'.

But really, what usually happens .... is that I am transported back to my childhood and still see these families as I did when I was young. I remember where I was when I watched those shows, and how my siblings and I would tune in every week to see how life turns out for them.
Life seemed so much simpler then...
And I miss those simple messages.
I am grateful for the reminder of a simpler time, and a simpler message.
Starting every day at 5:30

My kids are right there too... only now that we are in the 21st Century, they often Tivo The Brady Bunch and watch it later. They hate to miss a day. To them, it's new. They don't believe me when I tell them that Marsha Brady is the same age as their Grandma.

Yup, simpler times. They just don't make shows like that anymore.

Oh do I remember every day after school we had to watch Brady Bunch, and Gilligan Island.

I had such hope for them getting off that island one day. LOL!

I might have to Tivo BB for my kids to enjoy.
